God decided to flood the earth because the people had turned away from Him, They had become corrupt, hardening their hearts towards God and not obeying Him - all except Noah and his family. God found favor with Noah and chose to save him and his family. God gave Noah specific instructions on how to build the ark and after many years, when all the preparations had been made, God sent the rains and water to cover the earth.
